LIGHTCONE

The dark answers slowly.

A deep-time space simulation. One game year every ten minutes, whether you watch or not. A hundred thousand real stars. Information moves at the speed of light. The world never pauses.

Twenty-six years in the making. No publisher, no investor, no ads. One maker, one server.

◈Key features

Everything below is live in the current build. The six laws come first; the rest is grouped by where it happens. Open a card for the full text and where to find it in the console. One game year is ten real minutes.

♥︎Keep the world turning

LIGHTCONE runs on one server that never stops. The tick advances a game year every ten minutes, for every world at once, day and night.

There are no ads and no lootboxes, and there never will be. The server, the mail, the catalog and the maker's time are paid for by the players. Support is the only income this world has.

Supporters wear a badge in the world and on this page. Support buys no advantage: the world is identical for every player.

⟡Roadmap — the charted course

What is already in development. Everything on this chart is committed. Anything not listed belongs on the boards below.

CHARTED◭ SociodynamicsA research track for cohesion. It makes the crowd variable measurable and improvable, with a margin of error that never closes.
DEEP FUTURE◎ The second sunThe Kardashev road past the Dyson swarm. Industry and power measured against a star's whole output instead of a planet's grid.
DEEP FUTURE∵ The Mind speaksThe Mind writes its own briefings instead of filling a template. The wording follows the temperament set on its dials.
DEEP FUTURE⌁ The open universeA public API. Other developers can run their own games inside this universe, under the same physics. A third-party game sees only what its own light cone allows.

No dates on this chart. Order and scope can change. Supporters read the changes first.

⌗Changelog

Every build has a date and a letter. What changed, what it affects, nothing else. Newest first.

◈Community

Three boards. Every post carries its author's portrait, species name, badges, and three dates: the author's colony year, the world year, and the real date.

⚠︎Bug reports & ideas

Bugs, balance, ideas, interface, praise. One vote per report. Reports that shape the game earn the ⟡ supporter badge.

A new civilization takes two minutes: an e-mail, a password, a cradle, and a language for your names. Your first game year begins when the cradle is chosen.

Free. No download. Your e-mail carries the Mind's letters: a weekly digest while you are away, plus a letter when a crisis or a once-only window opens. One click unsubscribes; an impactor warning still reaches a confirmed address.

✦The galactic record — firsts, held forever

One shared universe keeps one chronicle. Each first is claimed once, by one people, and is never reassigned. Some are still unclaimed.

⋆About the badges

⋆ CONSTELLATION WALKERDraw at least five constellations in your sky, each of at least five stars, then cover every star in each one: with works standing there, an envoy audience held there, or a layer of ruins uncovered there. A colony alone does not cover the star. Complete constellations are counted in a separate leaderboard.
LIVE
◈ FOUNDERFor the first thousand real players: a colony founded, or a SETI reply sent. The badge carries its number.
LIVE
⇋ FIRST CONTACTFor those who invited a civilization that has verified its e-mail address.
LIVE
✶ ASTRONOMERFor those who enter a star in their catalog under its true name, the one Earth's astronomers gave it. Finding it is not enough. The badge counts every such star.
LIVE
♁ PALE BLUE DOTFor those who find the Sun among a hundred thousand stars, and enter it in their catalog as SUN.
LIVE
◇ EARLY OBSERVERFor those who arrived before a registration date that has not yet been set.
